THERE IS NO BALANCE. IT’S A FULL-ON TUG-OF-WAR.

September 16, 2026 | Uncategorized

We always hear about work-life balance. There is no balance. I like to call it a full-on tug-of-war…

I’m writing this as I’m waiting for my daughter at a dance studio. She’s currently at rehearsal.

It’s no different for people with a career in government sales.

ESPECIALLY IF WE’RE INVOLVED IN WRITING PROPOSALS!

For a minute, though, think about who competes in tug-of-war. Firefighters. Shipbuilders. Navy SEALs. The strongest, fiercest people we can find on either end of the rope.

That is not a coincidence. It takes real muscle to hold the line. Family and work are both pulling with everything they’ve got.

If we are always choosing family over work, let’s face it, the work probably won’t be there. Whether it’s a job or your business.

Flip it around. Choose work over our family and they become strangers. Our absence becomes the default. We may even lose them completely.

I also liken it to a series of deposits and withdrawals. Family and work each have their own account. Both should get regular deposits. Both will have withdrawals. Neither should be overdrawn.

THAT’S THE SUPER HARD PART.

If anyone has figured it out, kudos to them, because I haven’t.

All I can do is take things day by day. Address what is urgent. Prepare for what is important. On both fronts.

One of my obligations is to provide financially for my family.

At the same time, I’m also supposed to provide physically and emotionally.

Sometimes one gets more than the other. Other times one gets in the way of the other. Regardless, neither can be ignored.

The best I can do is the best I can do, day by day.

Ultimately, what matters most is the family. No level of success replaces them.

My success means nothing without a Lex, Aly, Jett or Brynlee.

MYTH: I need to bid on everything to increase my odds.

FACT: Bidding on low probability opportunities drains time and resources. Companies that win consistently use a disciplined bid or no bid process and focus on opportunities where they can compete and differentiate.
